In a manual transmission vehicle, the clutch system is responsible for engaging and disengaging the engine's power from the transmission. The disc clutch is a key component of this system.
The disc clutch consists of a disc-shaped plate made of friction material, typically a composite material with a high coefficient of friction. The disc has a splined center hole that slides onto the transmission input shaft and is held in place by the pressure plate.
When the clutch pedal is pressed, it disengages the clutch by releasing the pressure on the disc. This allows the disc to separate from the flywheel, which is connected to the engine's crankshaft. When the clutch pedal is released, the pressure plate applies force to the disc, causing it to engage with the flywheel. This transfers power from the engine to the transmission, enabling the vehicle to move.
